My name is Justin Cron and I am a 27 year old saxophonist. I have been playing music since the age of 13. I originally started out playing the clarinet because I was told by my band instructor that my “lips weren’t shaped right for the saxophone”…lol I played it for three years before moving to Columbia, Missouri.

I attended Oakland Junior High, and tried out for the band my first day at school. My new band instructor had me audition with my clarinet and was blown away when I played a few Kenny G songs exactly how he played them but on a clarinet. He asked me why I wasn’t playing the saxophone, I went on to tell him that I didn’t play the saxophone because my lips weren’t shaped right… he laughed at me and then sent me home with a brand new shiny saxophone.  I took it home and couldn’t believe that I could actually play the saxophone just like I could my clarinet… that is how I got started playing the saxophone.

I have been playing the saxophone ever since and have enjoyed it more than you could ever know. I have had the opportunity to play with some amazing musicians at jazz conventions and workshops like Kirk Whalum and Tom Braxton. I have also had the opportunity to play at Disney Land and many other places across the U.S.

My reasoning for starting a youtube account was to show young and older aspiring musicians that the saxophone isn’t just used for jazz, jazz fusion, funk, acid etc…  I wanted to show people that the saxophone can be used for whatever style of music that you want to apply it to. I have stepped out on a limb and recorded some songs that people would never expect to hear a saxophone on, such as: sexy back by Justin Timberlake.

I hope that I can inspire others and help them to push themselves further than what they ever thought they could go with music. Don’t ever limit yourself to a certain style and don’t ever give up trying no matter what others say… if I would have listened to most people growing up I would have never taken the road less traveled.

    Hey Justin,

First off, your really talented and impressive.

Im a saxophonist as well but no were as talented as you, I mainly play piano and guitar. However, I am trying to find music sheets/tabs whatever for the kind of music you play, especially cocaine by clapton or gravity by mayer…

Please let me know where on earth you find these tabs, or if you can help me out
    thanks
    Cole

Hey Cole, thanks for leaving a comment! I wish that I could tell you where you could find sheet music to the songs that I play… but I actually just freestyle all the songs that I’ve ever recorded on youtube. I have thought about having them turned into sheet music, but I’ve not gotten a chance to look for someone that can write all the music out for me.

I wish you the best of luck with you music career and let me know if there is anything I can ever help you with!

      Take care,
      -Justin

Where are you located? Do you think you can play at my sister’s wedding in Orange County CA on sept 5th? Let me know so we can see how we can make it happen..

Hi Justin I am a tenor saxophonist as well that is trying to get started back after not playing for a couple of years. since senior year of high school. I am looking for a mouthpiece to buy, I would really appreciate if you shared with me the type of mouthpiece you use.

    • admin

Thanks for the comment! The mouthpiece that I use and have been using for the last 6 or 7 years is a Silver Billheart. They are great mouthpieces and the sound you can get from them is just amazing! They run around $150.00 to $300.00 for a good mouthpiece. I hope this helps and again, thanks for the comment!

  • nonclassical

Hi Justin , I really enjoyed your performances really impressive.
I wanna learn which type of sax you r using. And which saxsophone would you suggest for a beginner.
    thanx

  • Paul Bennight

Hey man, you sound wonderful! What kind of set up do you play on? Right now I’m playing a Buffet 800 series alto with a Meyer 5 mouthpiece, Rovner Eddie Daniels mouthpiece, and Vandoren V12 3.5 reeds. Keep up the good work man!

    • admin

It sounds like you’ve got a pretty niche setup man! I actually play on a Bundy II Student Model saxophone with a silver Brillhart mouthpiece and Vandoren V12 2.0 reeds.

    Hi Justin,

Thanx for being a true inspiration to fellow saxplayers :) I’ve tried to find information about what sax you are playing but wasn’t able to find what I was looking for?

    Regards from Sweden

    • Justin Cron

Thanks Thomas! I appreciate your comment. I have added what type of equipment I use to the saxophone forum page at the top of my site. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you!

Hey Fidel. How are you doing? Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. I am sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you, but I have been covered up with some stuff here these last couple months. I am actually working with someone right now to start putting out my own sheet music for the songs that I play. What songs were you looking for exactly?

  • Alexander

    Hey Justin!

I am starting to play sax, and just wanna say thanks to you and all the ppl like you who inspire others to play that wonderful instrument by performing so beautifully!
Just love the way you transmit the feeling while playing, wish I’ll be able to so too!
Thanks again for inspiring us – the newbees!! ;)

    • http://www.justincron.com Justin Cron

Hey keep at it man and you too will be able to do this!! It just takes a lot of determination and commitment!

    • http://www.diytuts.com Justin C.

How is your playing coming a long Alexander? You still playing?

  • tim

Hi justin, my name is Tim. I first discoveref you playing “apologize” on youtube. I was instantly amazed. Ive played alto for about ten years now, but i cant seem to get any better! Ive never had lessons, i basically taught myself the basics! I know youre probably a busy man, but i was wondering if there is any way you can tutor me somehow! I have a deep passion for the sax, but i get discouraged because when i practice, people get annoyed! I cant afford lessons, so if you cant help me my only other option is to give it up! Thank you for your consideration! my email is rjkjnjtj@gmail.com

    • http://www.diytuts.com Justin C.

Tim, are you still putting forth the effort to continue playing? I know that it’s tough to keep your head held high when you’re not getting the results that you’re looking for but I know you can do it man. I am a self taught saxophonist also. I went to school and learned the basics but I taught myself everything else I know. If you stay in contact with me here on justincron.com I will see what I can do about helping you out. I hope all is well! How old are you by the way?

  • Jacob

    hi Justin,

But what im wanting to know is, i’m getting marrie end of next year and would you play at our wedding, ofcourse flights accomodation and what not will be paid for,

    thank you

    • http://www.justincron.com Justin Cron

    • http://www.diytuts.com Justin C.

Jacob, how is the recovering coming from the surgery you had on your spine? Also, how was the wedding? :)

  • carlos

Hi Justin!!! my name is carlos im from mexico a play the alto sax but i cant get that sound like you what do you do on reed or what can i do, i try other mouthpiece actualli i have a beechleer metal 7!!! I apreciate yor coment thanks!!!!

    • http://www.diytuts.com Justin C.

Hey Carlos, I really appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment. I would suggest buying smaller size reed and really working on developing your embouchure more. It takes a lot of playing and time to develop a good tone, but most of the tone will come from having a VERY strong embouchure. What size reeds do you use now? and what type do you use?

  • Naveen Malik

I don’t think you know how much you’ve helped me as a saxophone player, I’m fourteen and started playing saxophone in jazz band in November.
I play flute primarily, but I had wanted to play saxophone more than anything.
After watching your “Isn’t She Lovely” Cover, I decided to play tenor, and I’m so glad I did.
So I just wanted to say, thank you.

    • http://www.diytuts.com Justin C.

Hey no problem man! How is playing coming a long for you? Are you having fun playing the tenor saxophone yet?
